The Top 7 Laundromat Business Models
Today, let’s dive into the exciting world of laundromat operations or business models. As someone who,s been in the business for quite some time, I’ve come to learn that there’s more than one way to run a successful laundromat. So, let’s explore the different types of laundromat operations you might encounter:
1. Traditional Self-Service Laundromats: These are your classic coin-operated
laundromats where customers come in, use the machines, and pay for their
laundry using coins or tokens. These types of laundromats typically offer a range
of washer and dryer sizes to accommodate different loads. While these traditional
stores often have modern amenities at times, they are generally very functional
and the best are clean, well lit and safe. I often refer to these as “Plain Jane”
laundromat operations.
2. Card-Operated Laundromats: Card-operated laundromats have become
increasingly popular in recent years and while I’m not sure that the payment
system alone is a business model, I do think these operators tend to be more
advanced in their business models. Instead of using coins, customers load
money onto a laundry card or even a hybrid type of system (able to accept cash or card), which they then use to pay for their laundry cycles. This method offers convenience for both customers and owners, as it reduces the need for handling coins and allows for easier tracking of revenue.
3. Full Service Laundry Centers: Some self-serve laundromats also offer drop-off and pick-up laundry services, catering to customers who prefer to have their laundry washed, dried, and folded for them. This can be a lucrative addition to a traditional self-service laundromat, as it appeals to busy individuals or those without access to
laundry facilities at home. In a full-service laundry center, the focal point of the
business can vary. In some cases, the core business remains self-serve with
WDF and Dry Cleaning as being ancillary. In other cases, like our 9,000 S.F.
superstore, the WDF & Delivery can be the highest revenue producing service.
The beauty of a full service laundry center is the ability to serve every member of
a local community while fully optimizing the facility and the team to maximum
profitability.
4. Eco-Friendly Laundromats: With environmental awareness on the rise, eco-
friendly laundromats are gaining popularity, especially in certain markets. These
operations often use energy-efficient machines, eco-friendly detergents, lighting,
cleaning supplies and even water-saving technologies to minimize their
environmental impact. Catering to customers who prioritize sustainability can be
a niche market with loyal patrons.
5. Combination Businesses: Some entrepreneurs choose to combine a
laundromat with other businesses to diversify their revenue streams. For
example, a laundromat could be paired with a café, a convenience store, car
wash or even a coworking space. This approach can attract a broader range of
customers and increase foot traffic. In many situations, this can distract the
management and team members but in the right location, demographics and
operator this can work well.
6. Mobile Laundry Services: In urban areas or densely populated neighborhoods,
mobile laundry services have emerged as a convenient alternative. These
services typically operate out of vans or trucks equipped with washers and
dryers, allowing customers to schedule pick-up and drop-off times at their
convenience. Another form of “mobile” laundry service can be a slightly different
take on the pickup and delivery operator. In these cases an operator may have a
truck for pickup/drop-offs but no actual machines or facility to process it in. The
operator will often outsource the actual processing of the laundry to a local
laundromat operator.
7. Luxury Laundromats: Luxury laundromats cater to customers who are willing to
pay a premium for a high-end laundry experience. These establishments often
feature upscale amenities such as premium machines, comfortable seating
complimentary refreshments, and even entertainment options like TVs, magazines, games and Wi-Fi.
