It’s well known at this point, but when Carla and I began in the laundromat industry back in 2010, we started with virtually no cash.
Technically that was in 2007 that we had very little cash. We saved up for 3 years and when we bought our first laundromat n 2010, we had about $30,000 liquid. It wasn’t a lot, but we’ve now turned that into a net worth over $3 million in 2024 and quickly climbing. I tell you this to inspire you, not to brag btw.
You may or may not be aware, but there’s some VERY wealthy individuals in the laundromat industry, but most made their money outside of laundromats and now use our wonderful industry to protect it. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, but understand, that was not us. We started at zero and created our wealth almost exclusively in the laundromat industry.
Why does this matter? Well, I think it’s important that we all understand that while wealth can be protected in our industry, it can ALSO be created here IF you know what your are doing, are comfortable with risk and understand leverage. Let’s dive in!
In a world seeming obsessed with the accumulation of wealth, the pursuit of money often takes center stage. However, a closer look reveals that money is merely a tool, and true wealth is built not just by the abundance of currency, but by the strategic use of leverage. Contrary to popular belief, wealth creation doesn’t always start with a hefty bank balance; it begins with an astute understanding and application of various forms of leverage. Here’s a few that’ve been helpful to us and hopefully will be helpful to you!
Building Skills: Leveraging Your Potential
Skills are the currency of the future. In today’s rapidly evolving landscape, those equipped with valuable skills hold the key to unlocking opportunities. By investing time and effort in honing your abilities, you create leverage for yourself in the marketplace. Whether it’s mastering coding languages, cultivating communication skills, or developing leadership qualities, each skill acquired become a leverage point for future success.
While us entrepreneurs like to discuss building assets so we don’t need to work IN our businesses anymore, we must never forget that skills are one of the few assets that can never be taken away from us. If not, building and leveraging your unique abilities and skills may be what gets you off the ground in the beginning.
Creating New Assets: Leveraging Innovation
True wealth is often generated by those who dare to innovate. By creating new assets – whether they be innovative products, revolutionary services, or disruptive technologies – we carve out a niche for ourselves in the market. This could intersect in some ways with our first leverage point of “building skills” but it can also be different as well.
Creating new assets can also serve as leverage, enabling you to generate income streams and accrue wealth over time. From groundbreaking startups to patented inventions, the ability to create new assets is a powerful form of leverage in the journey towards wealth creation.
The thing I love the most about this category is that they are often compounding as well. With skills we usually must trade time for money, but with creating something like an invention, we often sacrifice time in the beginning and then can leverage it repeatedly. That’s fun!
Borrowing Against Equity: Leveraging Existing Resources
One doesn’t always need a substantial initial investment to kickstart their entrepreneurial journey, but whatever you have should be considered. Back in 2010, we used that $30k in cash, our good credit, and yes, we leveraged our personal home to get our first laundromat to closing. That scares many people, (and it did us too) but entrepreneurship isn’t for the faint of heart.
In fact, one of my mentors early on game me some great and empowering advice. He said, “Dave, if you’re not all in, don’t do this at all.” Those were words that I’d never heard before. I’d always believed them to be true, but had never had anyone say them to me.
Why? Well, because this mentor was the first living, breathing entrepreneur that I’d ever spent time with. Everyone else in my life was either broke, a W2 employee caught in the rat race, or was so paralyzed by fear that they couldn’t fathom leveraging their personal belongings in order to make their dreams come true.
By leveraging existing assets and equity, we can access the capital needed to fuel our ventures. Whether it’s borrowing against home equity, securing business loans, or crowdfunding campaigns, smart entrepreneurs recognize the power of leveraging existing resources to fund their dreams and aspirations.
Networking: Leveraging Connections
In the realm of business, success often hinges on who you know rather than what you know. You can hate the game, or you can play the game, but the game doesn’t care about us, if we’re honest.
Fact is, building a robust network of connections opens doors to new opportunities, partnerships, and collaborations and I’m living proof of that. I didn’t realize the impact back in my early days, but I did know I needed a network to be successful. I invested heavily in this, even when I really couldn’t afford it. Don’t wait!
Each connection forged served as a potential leverage point, offering access to resources, expertise, and support that propelled me forward. By cultivating meaningful relationships with the right people, you too can leverage the collective power of your network to accelerate your journey towards wealth creation.
Let me add one last thing. Sometimes you must pay for this network in the form of conferences, travel, coaching, courses, workshops and even paid mentors. You can be prideful and argue whether you should have to do this or not, or you can acknowledge the power of your network and make the investment.
Mentorship: Leveraging Wisdom
Behind every successful individual lies a mentor or coach who provided guidance, wisdom and support along the way. Investing in mentorship is a form of leverage that enables us to tap into the knowledge and experience of seasoned professsionals. It’s an accelerant up there with jet fuel on a fire.
A mentor can offer invaluable insights, help navigate challenges, and provide accountability on our path to success. By leveraging the expertise of a mentor, we accelerate our learning curve and avoid costly mistakes, paving the way for greater achievements.
I cannot speak to how powerful mentorship has been in my journey and guess what? I have bigger, better and more mentors now than ever before as I try to reach my “next level.”
Consuming Quality Content: Leveraging Knowledge
In the digital age, information is abundant, but not all content is created equal. Yes, here at Laundromat Millionaire, e produce some free (and paid) content and it’s proven to be very helpful for thousands according to the feedback we receive, but understand, most free content is either designed to sell you something or it’s designed to entertain you.
By consuming the best content available – whether it’s books, podcasts, online courses or seminars – we gain access to valuable insights and strategies from thought leaders and experts. This knowledge becomes a form of leverage, empowering us to make informed decisions, adapt to changing trends, and stay ahead of the curve in our industry.
So how do we know the difference? Sometimes in the beginning we don’t. I’ve had great success by trying to always “peek behind the curtain” of the source. If an influencer or thought leader is proud of their operational story, they will openly share their backstory.
I think of Alex Hormozi in this way. I’ve learned more from his content than maybe anyone and he’s very upfront about his struggles with owning gyms, but also his successes in his big hit “Gym Launch.”
While Alex doesn’t run gyms today, he’s still very passionate about fitness and the gym industry and he’s now translated that passion to all things entrepreneurship. If you follow his content and the businesses he runs and invests in today, he’s very transparent about them.
If you find someone that’s very vague and refuses to take a position on anything, let that be the first sign that they may be a poser. Sure, there’s a lot of nonsense and con-artists out there, but there’s also a ton of rockstars. Don’t through out the baby with the bathwater.
Conclusion: Leveraging the Path to Wealth
Closing out today, in the pursuit of wealth creation, money is just one piece of the puzzle. We often think it’s everything and if we don’t have it, we can’t get started, but that’s not ture!
Let me leave you with one last lesson, if I may. Back in our VERY early days, we were scraping by and luckily had kept our full-time jobs to keep us afloat. I really wanted to go to an industry conference that I believed would put me in the right room, with the right people and the right content, but we REALLY couldn’t afford it.
It would cost about $3,000 that we just didn’t have. For the next few months, I worked all the overtime at work I could, and made it happen. Sure, I could’ve been wrong and wasted that $3,000, but it turned out I was right and that conference propelled me in a way I can’t really explain. To this day, I rarely miss an industry conference for this reason and if I do, it’s typically because of family commitments.
True wealth is built by leveraging a combination of resources, skills, connections and knowledge to create value and seize opportunities. By understanding and harnessing the power of leverage in its various forms, almost anyone can transcend financial limitations and embark on a journey towards abundance and prosperity. So, remember, it’s not about how much money you have, but rather how wisely you leverage what you do have that truly determines your wealth.
That’s all I’ve got for today. Remember, we’re ALWAYS rooting for you! Let’s elevate our industry together!
